CollectingCollectables.com are selling this Huntley and Palmers Bell advertising tin which is an oxidised copper plate tin in the shape of a bell. Sides decorated with embossed motifs. The top of the bell has the motto
"When Ye Doe Ringe, I Sweetly Singe"
and has a handle to the top
The motto on this bell tin was used fairly often on church bells. For example, an eighteenth century bell in the church of St Matthew, Walsall, is inscribed WHEN YOU US RING WE'LL SWEETLY SING THOMAS RUDHALL. GLOUCESTER 1775.
Similarly, all of the bells in St Anne's, Shandon in Ireland, have a poem beginning When us you ring we'll sweetly sing God preserve the Church and King.
Interestingly, in 1908 Mappin and Webb, Birmingham, produced a silver table bell with the motto "I'll sweetly sing when you me ring". The lettering on this bell is very close in style to the lettering on this tin. Perhaps its designer had seen this Mappin and Webb bell
Apart from some spots of rubbing to the surface with some metal showing through, the Bell is in remarkably good condition and a must for all bell and tin collectors!
