The First Edition

Huntley and Palmers Tropical Novelty Biscuit Tin 1891

CollectingCollectables.com are selling this extremely rare Huntley & Palmers Novelty Advertising Biscuit Tin, produced for just one year in 1891 entitled "Tropical" (see Huntley & Palmers web site).

This is a lozenge shaped tall tin with slightly embossed illustrations featuring monkeys on sides and on hinged lid

A charming design for this Victorian biscuit tin! On Monkey Island, at Bray, near Maidenhead, there is an eighteenth century fishing pavilion which is painted inside with similarly playful monkeys.

By the nineteenth century this building had become a popular inn. Perhaps the Reading-based designer took his inspiration from a trip downriver to this popular local resort? The inclusion of some charming children, though, is a typically Victorian touch.

Wonderful six panels each with a different illustration showing a young girl about to post a letter in an early Victorian post box, with a young boy propping himself against the back of the post box and a monkey sitting on top of the said post box. Other images include the monkey playing with a cat, dog and parrot.

There is extensive rubbing to bare metal (patches) but the designs are still visible. Internally the box is still bright and clean.
